New Oakland Mayor appoints John Flores as interim City Manager
The political “revolving door” between us and our neighbors continues as John Flores, who retired as Emeryville’s City manager in 2006, was appointed interim City Manager of Oakland by recently inaugurated Mayor Libby Schaaf. Flores will be Oakland fourth City Manager in the past 10 months.
Former City Manager Patrick O’Keeffe filled in as interim City Manager for Albany recently and current City Manager Sabrina Landreth came from The City of Oakland where she worked under former Mayor Jean Quan.
Flores served as City Manager of Emeryville for 19 years. Prior to this, he served the City of Oakland for 11 years including as Deputy City Manager. In “retirement”, John has been active on several nonprofit boards including the Emery Education Foundation and the Emeryville Center for the Arts. John has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Golden Gate University and an undergraduate degree in Social Science from San Jose State University.
Oakland mayor appoints new interim City Administrator
For the second time in less than a year, Oakland’s mayor is tapping an old hand to temporarily run the city’s government.
Mayor Libby Schaaf said Thursday that she was appointing John Flores, a former Emeryville city manager, who started his career in Oakland as interim city administrator. Flores, 68, will replace Henry Gardner, who himself came out of retirement to take the helm at City Hall on an interim basis.
Gardner was hoping to stick around until March when Schaaf is expected to hire Oakland’s first permanent city administrator since last June. But he learned recently that he must leave his post by Jan. 20 to avoid complications with his government pension.
