East Bay Times endorses Van Geffen, Bauters & Patz for Emeryville City Council

1 min read

The East Bay Times (formerly The Oakland Tribune) has endorsed three candidates for Emeryville City Council including John Van Geffen, John Bauters & Christian Patz (all Democratic Party candidates). Award-winning columnist and editorial writer Daniel Borenstein conducted a roundtable interview with five of the six candidates and ultimately determined endorsements based primarily on the criterion of “sage fiscal management”.

In what is becoming a concerning trend, Candidate Ally Medina was not present for the interview. Medina was the only candidate to not attend the Little City Emeryville Small Business Town Hall event and was reportedly a no-show for the Emeryville Coastal Clean-up Day despite promoting her participation via her Facebook page.

Borenstein is a Bay Area native who holds Master’s degrees in public policy and journalism from University of California, Berkeley. He notes traffic congestion to be among Emeryville’s biggest challenges but “they also leave a city budget in better shape than most in the East Bay.” The East Bay Times is part of the Bay Area News Group (BANG) who also own The San Jose Mercury News.
