Pedestrian Death Shuts down I-80 at Powell Street

A pedestrian was struck and killed early this morning on I-80 near the Powell on-ramp.

The investigation by the California Highway Patrol closed the freeway for more than an hour while traffic was diverted to Powell Street.

The victim, described only as male, was first reported by CHP Oakland shortly after 4 a.m. sitting on top of the freeway’s center divide of the onramp.

A short time later, a vehicle struck the person and the CHP closed westbound lanes on I-80 at 4:25 a.m. The freeway reopened at about 5:30 a.m.

September 11 Update: The pedestrian was identified by the Alameda  County coroner’s bureau on Wednesday as 38-year-old Daniel Boyer. No home address was listed for Boyer.
