One Medical opened their new Emeryville office to the public today. The primary care provider that was founded in San Francisco in 2007 has expanded rapidly with offices in neighboring Oakland and Berkeley. “With the new facility, the people of Emeryville can truly experience the One Medical difference” they noted through a press release. One Medical has targeted opening offices in high density population centers like ours.

Their new modern 2,361 sq. ft. office on Powell Street touts member benefits that include same day scheduling, guaranteed on-time appointments, 24/7 provider contact and on-site lab testing. “We think of the primary care physician as the ‘quarterback’ of health care” noted One Medical Communications Director Katie Dally. One Medical staff are also trained to address chronic health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, and lipid disorders.

One Medical is truly geared toward the busy working professional and have made punctuality a priority. “95% of our appointments start within five minutes of their scheduled time” according to Dally.

One Medical notes they are in-network with most health insurance plans. They do not currently accept Medi-Cal patients but do participate in a limited number of ACA/Exchange plans. They partner with other providers such as UCSF and nearby Stanford Health Care (whom just opened a month ago) for specialist referrals. Annual Membership to One Medical is $149.

Technological Backbone, Virtual and Preventative Care

One Medical has distinguished itself by using the benefits of technology to reduce inefficiency that it claims makes quality primary care “more accessible”. Being early adopters of electronic health records has helped them cut administrative costs by as much as two-thirds.

Their mobile app offers convenient appointment booking, doctor email and even incorporates patient-physician video chat. Last year they acquired the health-coaching app Rise to assist in preventative care. “[Our] virtual business allows people to get high-quality care without co-pays and deductibles,” says Founder and CEO Tom X. Lee

One Medical was recently recognized by Fast Company as One of the most innovative company in healthcare in 2017. “We’re doing more for less,” says Lee, “and always re-engineering our processes.” These benefits of these efficiencies allow providers to spend more time with patients. According to Business Insider, One Medical added 80,000 new patients in 2015 and continues to build a base of enterprise clients. One Medical now has 54 offices nationwide.

  1. People should know what is not written in any of this promo about Medical One. They require an annual membership fee! My primary care doctor moved recently to this medical group from a couple of blocks away and if I still want to have her as my doctor apparently I have to pay a $149. annual fee. I called Health Net my HMO and am filing a grievance as I find this truely unethical as I already pay a monthly premium for my medical insurance (plus Medicare fee) and a co-pay for doctor visits. My doctor claimed she doesn’t get enough money that way. If so then she and whatever group she’s with shouldn’t sign a contract with Health Net. I hope there are others blowing the whistle on this! They are doing this as well now at the Albany Medical Group on Hollis St. where this doctor previously was.

    • Thanks Jane. Not something I was looking to bury, just an oversight. Thanks for pointing this out and I’ve added this info into the body of the story.

      • Thanks. It’s just kind of a shocking new thing that is happening with the medical world these days. I recently retired and am naturally pretty sensitive to extra expenses like this on a pension.

    • What are you filing a grievance over? Your doctor doesn’t owe you anything. Do you think they are your slave? Find a different doctor if you don’t like it

    • Sorry to hear that Jane, but don’t fret: OneMedical will waive the annual fee for those under economic hardship.

      • Thanks, I probably will do that in that I like this new doctor I had to get after my old one left the previous group I was with last fall. I just found it all rather shocking and fact that I am recently retired and on a very fixed income I’m really sensitive to what I have to put out for these days. I pay even more now for my premium and for Medicare – more than I imagined as I thought Medicare would cover a lot but that’s not to be. Someone reported me in Nextdoor for being “hurtful” to their purpose. I was only pointing out that this is going on. I had to wonder if it WAS unethical but it’s just the way of the world these days. The grievance won’t go anywhere and I believe in free speech!

  2. This is great news! OneMedical has a very interesting model. It’s super useful for those with restrictive HMOs since your PCP becomes a nationwide network of offices. Also everything is online. Very convenient.

Now we just need a pharmacy nearby.

  3. On the plus side, my doctor, Dr. Michael Lewis, moved there. He is a fabulous doctor and I HIGHLY recommend him. On the down side, I am a Medicare patient, so I lost a terrific doctor. *Sigh*

  4. Does anyone have any idea what’s going in next to 5700 Hollis? I noticed there’s a ‘LEASED’ sign in the window.
