  1. EvilleEye:

There are no suspect descriptions AGAIN. Please STOP publishing the crime reports from EPD if they refuse to provide descriptions of the subjects.

There is a point where the community needs to take a stand and say that this “progressive” nonsense needs to stop. The shooting of Mr. Madias was that point.

Or edit the report to make it clear what’s going on:

“Two male suspects walked up to a parked vehicle, occupied by three adults, pulled a gun and demanded the loss. The EPD is withholding descriptions of the suspects from the community at the request of City Council.”

“A male suspect entered the business and robbed the clerk at gunpoint. EPD believes that the safety of the community requires that we not describe the suspect.”

“A robbery at gunpoint occurred. A male suspect demanded cash from the register. The description of the robber has been censored because you might be a racist.”

“A man was shot in the head by a male suspect in front of the Amtrak. We are withholding the description of the shooter for your safety. We also recently announced we would be laying off the 28 year veteran who prepares this report because we don’t like what the reports she produces say.”

    etc.

Take a stand. We’re getting shot at and robbed at gunpoint. Despite what City Council thinks, I think the public can handle knowing the race and description of the people shooting and robbing us around town.

It’s racist as hell to think that you have to hide the race of people committing crimes to promote equality. Really think about that for a second and the built-in assumption that EPD and the City Council are pushing.

    • The EPD is working on a policy manual that will outline this more completely but for now, The policy is basically that descriptions are provided only in the instance that they would be helpful in solving a crime (i.e. nothing vague which I know is subjective). If you follow the EPD on Nixle, they’re certainly not shy about posting images of arrested subjects (which we often repost on our social media channels).
I’d be happy to include a disclaimer in these moving forward. FYI: Berkeleyside, which we often imitate, does not provide racial descriptions in its crime reports.

      • EPD Policy Manual – Chapter 1

The Emeryville Police Department will do whatever that guy at the Tattler and his friends on City Council demand we do.

Please be advised that this includes, without limitation, reversing any longstanding policy at the drop of a hat without public discussion and with little regard for public safety. City Council knows best.

EPD Policy Manual – Chapter 2

It is now the policy of the EPD to censor our public reports if the facts being reported are unpleasant or potentially threaten progressive ideology provided it keeps the peace with City Council. Specifically, we will not mention race or any descriptive information about crimes being committed in Emeryville to avoid anyone (paticularly us) from being called racist.

If you are robbed at gunpoint or shot, and we unintentionally ask you to describe the race or age of the suspect, please ignore us. Old habits die hard. We can’t identify the suspect with just that information, and we don’t want anyone to make unreasonable stereotypes, so it’s really just safer if you just kept everything to yourself. We will do the same.

EPD Policy Manual – Chapter 3

If you think you notice an increase in crime in the City of Emeryville or anyone else gets shot, please bear in mind that this is unrelated to our policies. It is our policy that it is only coincidental that our policies have changed in a manner that makes getting away with crime in Emeryville significantly easier. EPD’s policy to address this non-problem shall be to further limit the amount of information we provide you until that problem goes away as well.

EPD Policy Manual – Chapter 4

*** REDACTED *** Please elect a new City Council *** REDACTED***

  2. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.

    (…but please don’t mention race.)

    (…or age for that matter.)

(…sex is ok. Mostly men committing crimes and, ya know, fight the patriarchy.)

(…but not clothes or any distinguishing features that might give away anything…you realize the justice system is oppressive don’t you? Don’t you?!! )

    (…on second thought…)

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, keep it to your damn racist, homophobic, xenophobic, ablist, ageist self.

(…but here are the booking photos of some people we just arrested…pretty cool huh…)
