PRESS RELEASE: Last Saturday, March 12th, the School Board of the Emery Unified School District held a special meeting of the District Board of Trustees at the new Emeryville Center of Community Life (ECCL).

This meeting was attended by over 70 parents, community members and staff.

Emery School District Superintendent Dr. John Rubio presented graphic slides to demonstrate the site safety and grade level separation built into the design of the ECCL campus.

Dr. John Rubio also led everyone through the site for a tour; so all participants could have a first‐hand experience of the great amount of available space, the size of the classrooms, and the closed‐off and safe playing area for kindergarten through fifth grade students.

After the tour, Dr. Rubio presented the fiscal implications of several different ECCL grade level span configurations. “I was very happy to see how many parents felt better about the campus and their children’s safety after experiencing and walking through the actual construction site. I think it really is going to be a great campus for our students.”

“I was one of those parents against this project in the beginning. I was worried about the safety of our students‐… not anymore.”
– Emeryville parent Ms. Allen

Participants also discussed the positive benefits and what they are excited about regarding ECCL, and also discussed concerns and solutions for the district and board to consider. The superintendent will be bringing these items back to the board.

Background of the Emeryville Center of Community Life:

In 2001, the District and the City came together to help the schools during a difficult fiscal crisis. In exchange for a $4M loan, the district was sharing the use of its fields and athletic facilities with the City’s Department of Community Services, and the City Council and the School Board agreed to sit jointly as a City/Schools Committee; a cross‐sector governance body tasked with guiding the collaborative work.

Also developing out of this new city‐school district partnership was the concept of the Emeryville Center of Community Life (ECCL), a multi‐use city‐school campus and community center offering K‐12 education, continual learning, recreational, health and social services for all Emeryville citizens. Since 2002‐03, the City and the District have been planning the development of this multi‐purpose facility that will also address the City’s lack of adequate recreational space and facilities by enhancing and expanding its educational, sports and recreational facilities.

The proposed ECCL Project includes: (a) a wellness center for community and family support service, a school/community use library, a K‐8 learning center, a 9‐12 learning center, a community multipurpose room, a school multipurpose room and rehabilitated gymnasium and pool area with lighting; and (b) a renovated sports, recreation and outdoor space, including a playing field with lights, a learning garden, a social/dining terrace and a courtyard at the library; allowing for maximum enrollment of 900 students.

Although it took many years of conversation and work, this facility is now under construction and opening soon for the children and residents in Emeryville and the surrounding area.

  1. Five artist proposals for Public Art at the Emeryville Center of Community Life (ECCL) are on display at City Hall. Two artists are competing for a commission on the corner of 53rd Street and San Pablo Avenue and three are competing for a commission either in the Welcome Center or the Library Courtyard. Likely, two artists will be commissioned. Each artist has presentation boards on display on the mezzanine level of Emeryville City Hall. These boards will be on display until the Public Art Committee meeting on April 14th and can be viewed that evening and on the evening of the April 5th City Council meeting
