Construction at the 14.5-acre Emeryville Public Market redevelopment project entered a new phase last week with the creation of the Shellmound bypass road. The road will enable the completion of undergrounding of utilities for an approved parcel that will face the existing Public Market and Marketplace tower. Construction of the phase is said to be on schedule and expected to be completed in time for the Grand Opening of the highly anticipated New Seasons Market in October. The project is one of the largest mixed-use development projects ever approved in our city.
Part of the EPM’s vision includes moving away from the antiquated “strip mall” retail layout by replacing the surface-level parking with a garage and rooftop parking (similar to the Oakland Whole Foods). One of the most ambitious aspects of the redevelopment plan is the realignment of Shellmound Street that will shift a segment of the road away from the railroad tracks through where the current marketplace parking lot is.
On March 20th, construction crews completed the cutover of the bypass road that will accommodate transit during construction. After the road is realigned, a new parcel will be built on the Eastern side of Shellmound to create facing retail and a cozier “downtown” feel.
The project will also incorporate two new street segments with on-street parking (62nd and 63rd Streets), addition of six new buildings within the site; and an enlarged Christie Park. The project is the first in the nation to receive “Platinum” status under the U.S. Green Building Council’s “LEED for Neighborhood Development” pilot program (the highest rating given).
The temporary bypass road is too narrow to accommodate dedicated bike lanes and bicyclists will have to share this road with vehicles until it is complete. When complete, the realigned Shellmound will have dedicated green bike lanes six feet wide on both sides of Shellmound between 64th St. and Shellmound Way.
The Public Market is also communicating the following transit service changes:
- AC Transit lines 26 and 57 (from Emeryville) will not serve the stop on Shellmound Street near Public Market during construction. Please use the regular stop on Christie Avenue at Christie Park during this time.
- Emery Go-Round stop #25 located on Shellmound at Public Market will not be served. Please use stop #29 on Christie.
The Public Market will post monthly updates on the progress of their construction on their website and on social media. Parking availability will be impacted during this phase and patrons are encouraged to watch for updated directional signage. All retail and offices for Public Market will remain open for business during this process.
