Not the story I wanted to report but apparently the search for Emeryville resident Beau Rasmussen has been called off after being missing for nearly a month.

Though searchers who have combed local beaches for weeks have not found a body, friends and family of Beau Rasmussen, who went missing after the Bay to Breakers race last month, have planned a June 29 memorial service in Portland to remember the Emeryville man.

“At this point the search is over,” Nicole Apelian, Rasmussen’s stepmother, said Wednesday night.

Apelian and hundreds of family and friends scoured the San Francisco coast for signs of Rasmussen after he disappeared around noon on May 19. Rasmussen said goodbye to his friends in Golden Gate Park after the Bay to Breakers 7.46 mile race, which he had walked, and headed to Ocean Beach, friends said.

His clothing was later found on the beach, indicating he may have stripped down to his underwear, which was not found, and gone swimming.

The following night, his phone, credit cards and passport were discovered near the Beach Chalet Brewery and Restaurant across the street from Ocean Beach. Apelian said he was carrying his passport because he had lost his wallet. She said there are no indications he had a plan to disappear on his own.

“He was the one of the most amazing people I ever knew,” Apelian said through tears Wednesday night.

The service will be held at 2 p.m. June 29 at The Madeleine Parish, located at 3123 NE 24th Avenue in Portland, OR
