July 2016 Emeryville Crime Report: Multiple Carjackings lead bump in Violent Crime

The Emeryville Crime Report for July includes 181 total crimes (up from 168 in June or approx. +8%). The largest increase came in violent crime which was up 67% for the month. The total of 35 violent crimes represented a spike for the month from previous years which averaged just 23 crimes reported over the past three years. Property crimes were flat and even saw a slight decline from previous years of the same month.


REPORTING DISTRICT BOUNDARIES

The City of Emeryville is divided into small geographical areas that facilitate the Department’s efforts to tract crime and neighborhood problems, and allocate personnel resources to meet the service need. Crime statistics are reported by the EPD through CrimeReports.com. An archive of monthly crime statistics provided can be viewed on the city website.

REPORTING DISTRICT MATRIX:

The reporting district matrix lists the category and number of crimes reported by district. The descriptions below are “highlights” and are not provided for every crime reported.


CARJACKING:

District 4

Powell St., and Frontage Rd.: A male suspect who appeared mentally unstable, attempted to car jack another male. EPD detained the suspect who was transported to a mental hospital for evaluation, and then transported to jail.

District 9

Parking lot of Pak N Save, 3889 San Pablo Ave.: A Black male suspect brandished scissors at an elderly male victim, pulled the victim from his vehicle and threw him to the ground. The suspect then drove away in the victim’s car. EPD recovered the vehicle.


ROBBERY:

District 1

IFO 6466 Vallejo St.: Three suspects approached a male victim, brandished a pipe or flashlight and demanded the victim’s cash. LOSS: Backpack containing a laptop, iPhone and a wallet. SUSPECTS: Black males, 20-27 years old.

District 2

Salt, Pepper, Sugar, 1607 63rd St.: A robbery at gun point occurred. LOSS: iPad and currency. SUSPECTS: #1 Black male, 20-30 years old, hazel eyes, 210 lbs., wearing a black mask, a red hoody and black pants. #2 Black male, 6’1”, 185lbs., wearing a black mask, a green hoody and brown pants.
65th/Hollis St.: A Black male suspect robbed a female of her purse and fled the area.

District 5

Victoria’s Secret, 5672 Bay St.: A female shoplifter stole merchandise and exited the store. An employee confronted the suspect who became combative.

District 7

CVS Pharmacy, 4349 San Pablo Ave.: Two suspects concealed merchandise and exited the store without paying. Loss Prevention attempted to detain the suspects, however the female suspect punched the agent in the chest. The agent recovered the merchandise and the suspects fled the area. SUSPECT: #1 Black male 6’5” wearing an orange construction vest. #2 Black female 5’5”, wearing a black hooded sweater, pink blouse, and black leggings.
CVS Pharmacy, 4349 San Pablo Ave.: A female suspect selected and concealed merchandise and exited the store without paying. The female suspect and two other females battered a store employee, who attempted to recover the merchandise. One of the females brandished a gun, later discovered to be a BB gun, as they fled in a vehicle. EPD later arrested all three suspects who were detained by Oakland Police.
CVS Pharmacy, 4349 San Pablo Ave.: Two black male suspects entered the store, selected and concealed merchandise in bags. The manager attempted to detain the suspects, however the suspects pushed past the manager and fled the store.

District 8

40th/ San Pablo Ave. near bus stop: A strong-arm robbery occurred. SUSPECT: Hispanic male, fled to the passenger side of a silver or gray Mercedes. LOSS: Briefcase and a iPhone.

District 9

Home Depot, 3838 Hollis St.: A female was robbed of her bicycle by an acquaintance. Suspect: Black male, 35 years old, 5’8”, 170 lbs., wearing and black shirt and brown shorts.
Pak N Save, 3889 San Pablo Ave.: A male suspect pushed a female down and forcefully took her purse. The suspect then fled to a vehicle. SUSPECT: Black male with black dreadlocks that had blonde tips, wearing a green and blue scarf over his face, a blue shirt, and blue jeans. SUSPECT VEHICLE: Green vehicle, no further description.

District 10

Target, 1555 40th St.: Five black female shoplifters entered the store and committed a theft. The females threatened Loss Prevention agents as the agents attempted to detain them. The agents recovered the loss, however the females fled the area.
Target, 1555 40th St.: A female concealed merchandise and exited the store without paying. Loss prevention detained the female, however the female called for help from her acquaintance who was inside the store. Both females struggled with loss prevention in an attempt to flee the store with merchandise. Loss Prevention recovered the merchandise and the females fled. EPD arrested the females shortly thereafter.


AGGRAVATED ASSAULT:

District 8

46th/Adeline St.: A female punched her ex-boyfriend on the mouth and hit him on the head with a large rock.

District 9

40th/Horton St.: A road rage incident resulted in one driver hitting the other driver on the cheek with a Coca Cola bottle.


COMMERCIAL BURGLARY:

District 1

Mountain Travel Sobek, 1266 66th St.: An attempted burglary occurred. Attempted POE: Front window. The suspect was unable to gain entry.

District 3

Nady Systems, 6701 Shellmound St.: POE: Window – Plywood removed. LOSS: A speaker and a metal case. SUSPECT: Hispanic male, late 20s, 5’7”, with long curly hair wearing a brown jacket.
Nady Systems, 6701 Shellmound St.: POE: Door. LOSS: A potted plant. EPD arrested the suspect on the scene.
Public Storage, 6501 Shellmound St.: A storage unit was broken into. LOSS: A bicycle and two remote control helicopters.

District 5

Courtyard by Marriot, 5555 Shellmound St.: A hotel room was rummaged through and items were stolen. LOSS: An iPad, jewelry, car keys, a Nintendo Game system and games, a wash kit and an iPod.

District 7

1100 47th St.: POE: Door glass smashed. LOSS: A Duffle bag containing keyboards and calculators.
1100 47th St.: POE: Door glass smashed. LOSS: None.

District 8

3800 San Pablo Ave. Construction site: POE: Office door. LOSS: Dell computer monitor.
1074A 45th St., (Storage unit): Numerous tool cases were opened and moved. LOSS: Unknown.

District 9

Verizon, 3990 Hollis St.: POE: Window – Smashed. LOSS: None.


RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY:

District 2

1465 65th St., POE: 1st floor lobby bike rack. LOSS: (1) Schwinn Searcher bicycle, women’s 21 speed, dark blue with rear rack. Serial #SSN1DC13N00154.
1465 65th St., #274: POE: Door – Lock picked. The suspect rummaged through the apartment. LOSS: None.
1465 65th St., 4th floor bike rack: LOSS: (2) bicycles, bike tires, and a car battery.

District 3

6401 Shellmound St., #7410: POE: Front Door – No sign of force. The apartment was rummaged through. LOSS: Apple iMac and several pairs of shoes.

District 5

5600 block of Bay St.: Garage, LOSS: a Trek Hybrid.

District 9

1331 40th St., #304: POE: Unknown. LOSS: Speakers, an iPad, a Toshiba touch screen, a smartphone, a hover board, shoes, headphones, a watch, a backpack and jewelry.


AUTO THEFT:

Of the 7 vehicles reported stolen:

  • 6 vehicles were recovered intact
  • 1 vehicle was recovered damaged
