February 2017 Crime Report: Auto Burglaries Surge, Petty Thefts See Decline

The February 2017 Emeryville Crime report saw 212 total crimes reported (down from 238 in January or -11%). Auto Burglaries continued to plague our city with 105 reports putting us on an alarming 50% projected increase from 2016. Auto Burglaries constituted nearly 50% of all crimes reported for the month. Petty Theft, which is generally the second most common crime reported in our city, took a dip and are trending downward at about -9% from last year.

The City of Emeryville is divided into small geographical areas that facilitate the Department’s efforts to tract crime and neighborhood problems, and allocate personnel resources to meet the service need. Crime statistics are reported by the EPD through CrimeReports.com. An archive of monthly crime statistics provided can be viewed on the city website.

The reporting district matrix lists the category and number of crimes reported by district. The descriptions below are “highlights” and are not provided for every crime reported.


ROBBERY:

District 5

Marshall’s 5795 Christie Ave.: A shoplifter brandished an ice pick at employees to complete the theft of a box speaker. Additionally, the suspect and an accomplice stole a tip jar from Starbucks. EPD arrested both suspects and recovered the losses shortly thereafter. Suspects: #1 Black male, 19 years old, wearing a red hat, a Raider’s jacket and blue jeans. #2 Black male, 19 years old, wearing a black jacket and camouflage pants.
It’s Sugar, 5624 Bay St.: A suspect entered the business, simulated a weapon, and demanded cash from the safe. LOSS: $4,522.87. Suspect: Black male, 5’6”-5’10”, wearing a black hoodie with neon stripes, black pants, and black church shoes with white stitching and a silver buckle.

District 8

4120 San Pablo Ave.: Two suspects followed a man and robbed the man at knifepoint. LOSS: $1500 cash, Timberland boots, and an iPhone 7. Suspects: #1 Black male, 30-40 years old, 5’9”, 250 lbs., wearing a white t-shirt, a black and blue ball cap, and black and blue shoes. #2 Black male, 30-40 years old, 5’11”, 270 lbs., wearing a gray polo sweat suit. Suspect Vehicle: 2017 Kia van, gray.
Adeline St. & 39th St.: Two suspects robbed a man at gunpoint. LOSS: Backpack containing a wallet, prescription medication, and sunglasses. Suspects: #1 Black male, 6’1”, average build wearing dark clothing, possibly a hoodie, armed with a handgun. #2 Black male, wearing dark clothing, possibly a hoodie, armed with a handgun. Suspect Vehicle: Older model sedan, possibly an Acura or Nissan, dark green.

District 9

Pak n Save, 3889 San Pablo Ave.: A shoplifter deployed a stun gun on an employee to avoid detention. The employee was not injured. LOSS: (8) Tide pods. Suspect: Black female, 20-30 years old wearing a purple jacket.

District 10

Target, 1555 40th St.: A shoplifter placed (10) boxes of baby formula in a plastic bag and exited the store without paying. Upon contact by loss prevention, the shoplifter lifted his shirt and showed the loss prevention officer the handle of a gun in his waistband. The shoplifter got into a vehicle and fled the area. Suspect: Black male, 6’7”, 180 lbs., wearing all black clothing. Suspect Vehicle: 2000 Saab, 4-Door, gray.


AGGRAVATED ASSAULT:

District 5

IFO Forever 21, 5668 Bay St.: A male punched his girlfriend in the face causing serious injury. The victim attempted to run, but she was attacked by four to five other females. Suspect: Black male, 5’8”, 145 lbs., Other suspects: Black females, no further description.

District 8

Emery St., & W MacArthur Blvd.: A verbal altercation between a man and two women resulted in the man pulling a knife and threatening to stab both women. Suspect: White male, 5’4”-5’6”, 140 lbs., wearing a black jacket, dark pants and dark shoes.


COMMERCIAL BURGLARY:

District 6

Gender Spectrum, 1501 Powell St., #H: PPOE: Unknown. LOSS: Several electronics. A second burglary occurred at this location. POE: Door – Forced open. LOSS: Digital camera and electronics.


RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY:

District 1

5524 Beaudry St., #C: POE: Kitchen window – Screen removed. The victim was asleep during the burglary. LOSS: Novara Ponderosa, women’s Bicycle, purple with yellow lettering.

District 5

The Emeryville Marina, 3300 Powell St., A43, (Boat): POE: Front window – Forced open. LOSS: A laptop, and jewelry.

District 8

1039 47th St., #C: POE: Bedroom window. The victim was awakened by the suspect attempting to enter the residence. The victim startled the suspect and the suspect fled the area. Suspect: Unknown race, 5’7”, 150 lbs., wearing a dark sweatshirt.


AUTO THEFT:

Of the 14 vehicles reported stolen:

  • 1 report was a motorcycle
  • 10 vehicles were recovered intact
  • 1 report was an attempted theft
  • 1 vehicle was recovered damaged
  • 1 vehicle was recovered with minor striping
  • 1 vehicles is still outstanding

  1. You are providing a great public service for Emeryville.

    I will send you a check for $50…not much but I am retired and have many expenses that come with aging. The crime stats make me happy that I live in zone 1.

    As you well know we have a race issue. And as you know and report the great majority of crimes are done by blacks between late teens and late twenties…I sort of wish that there was a higher % of whites to decrease prejudice. Any stats on what percent of the perps live in Eville?…particularly the percent who live in Oakland…and what parts.
