Daiso, often referred to as “The Japanese Dollar Store” (in actuality, items start at $1.50) has announced it will be opening in the former Pier 1 spot at the Powell Street Plaza. Construction is moving fast and Daiso has already announced plans for a Grand Opening Celebration with free goodie bags. The Emeryville Daiso store is the chain’s 15th Northern California store and its 53rd store in the state. If the Facebook reaction by E’villains is any indication, the store should do well.

Daiso Japan was established in 1977 where it now has over 2,800 branches. Daiso is rapidly expanding outside of its native Japan and according to their press release, currently have over 600 overseas locations. They are reportedly averaging 10 – 20 new stores globally every month. Daiso’s U.S. stores sell over 20,000 different products including gift items, school supplies, housewares, kitchenware, beauty supplies, stationery, electronic accessories and everyday sundries. “With the continuing increase in the cost of living Daiso’s mission is to help consumers maintain a high standard of living without spending more” the press release goes on to explain.
