Construction has been progressing steadily on the renovated Marchant building that literally straddles the North Oakland-Berkeley-Emeryville border of San Pablo Avenue (ProTip: Locals prefer “Three Corners”, not “NOBE”). The building has attracted new tenants including an Amazon Fulfillment Center and TCHO Chocolates and the completion of the adjacent 98 residential unit Higby apartments has helped give the area some traction. Now City Sports Club will be opening a two-story, 44,000 sq. ft. health club that is expected to be completed by fall.

Marchant’s ambitious plans for the space can be viewed in this presentation deck [PDF].

The location had initially intended on opening this month but permitting with the City of Berkeley had set them back a bit and are now on pace to open mid to late September. When open, the state-of-the-art gym will include amenities such as:

  • Over 100 pieces of cardio equipment
  • 25,000 pounds of free-weights
  • A lap pool with Aqua Fit classes
  • Fitness room with Yoga, Zumba, Kickboxing and Pilates classes

Parents will appreciate City Sports Kids Club which offers day care to members for an additional $10 monthly fee or $5 drop-in rate. The location will also offer members free validated parking for up to two hours. City Sports Club has an ambitious plan of expanding to as many as thirty facilities in the Bay Area over the next five years. City Sports Club is a chain within the Fitness International LLC group, which also owns LA Fitness who have over 800 locations located through the US and Canada.

City Sports is currently offering Pre-opening rates that start around $30/mo with a sign-up fee that varies. Especially appealing with City Sports Clubs is the all-gym access that comes with every membership. “We’ve already signed up about 500 members during our pre-sale period” according to membership counselor Mikko Ruisla who noted their SF location has as many as 10,000 members with 3,000 daily visitors. City Sports is utilizing the 2378 Shattuck Berkeley location for pre-sales and also has a sales tent set up near the construction site. Those interested in membership can stop by or call them at (510) 201-5576. The City of Berkeley Planning Application can be viewed online [PDF].
