East Bay Express, the Bay Area’s only independently owned large-circulation newspaper is a local alternative to mainstream media with both online and print publications. In addition to feature stories and news, EBX has a weekly culture column, Eco Watch and the popular syndicated relationship and sex advice column Savage Love.
Their annual “Best of the East Bay” issue includes hand-picked Arts, Culture, Restaurants & Bars category winners as well as creative awards such as “the best place to cry in public” and “Best Cop Dancers in the East Bay“. They also have Readers’ Poll Winners. This year (The first), the award for the Best Neighborhood Blog went to (Drumroll please) … The E’ville Eye!

Well not only are we Emeryville’s #1 ranked News site, we’ve been honored with a BOEB (Page 63 of the July 23-29 print edition). The brief post notes “The E’ville Eye has everything a local blog should”. If the next time you see me around E’ville walking Fiona with a swagger, you know why 😉 Hopefully this honor doesn’t come with me having to make a speech, but if it did, “I’d like to thank our contributors, the loyal readers, engaged residents & the first advertisers who took a chance on citizen journalism” (and of course EBX).
Founded in 1978, EBX is an Oakland-based weekly newspaper focused around Oakland & Berkeley but serving the entire East Bay. Jay Youngdahl, a Texas workers-rights attorney, acquired majority control of the news source in 2010 from longtime editor and minority owner Stephen Buel. “We seek to promote truth, expose wrongdoing, and give voice to the voiceless” notes EBX in their about section. EBX was recently honored with 6 awards for journalism excellence in the Association of Alternative Newsmedia’s 2014 national contest.
The distinction is a “feather in our cap” but The E’ville Eye wants to accomplish much more. Our resident lobbying efforts have yielded plans for a neighborhood dog park and we continue to pursue getting a pilot Emery Go-Round route to West Oakland BART which the city is exploring. The roadmap for the E’ville Eye is coming together, but we desperately need contributors to represent all of E’ville. History, Education, Parents, Seniors … these are important components of our city that we lack the resources to sufficiently cover. Advertisers such as Webpass and Farley’s Coffee have stepped forward to support citizen journalism and align with residents with a couple more in the queue. Make a donation today or advertise with us to keep us working for all E’villains!
