Talk about a fantastic way to start your week. I personally nearly dropped my coffee on my morning dog walk with Fiona about 7:45AM when I looked up. A massive Double Rainbow coming from the West, spanning our entire city (I immediately thought of the viral YouTube video by Paul “Bear” Vasquez). I went to Instagram and was delighted to see my feed bombarded with pics from all vantage points. I captured some of them in this post for all to enjoy. A Double Rainbow or “Secondary Rainbow” according to Wikipedia “are caused by a double reflection of sunlight inside the raindrops, and appear 10° outside of the primary rainbow at an angle of 50–53°. As a result of the second reflection, the colours of a secondary rainbow are inverted compared to the primary bow, with blue on the outside and red on the inside. The secondary rainbow is fainter than the primary because more light escapes from two reflections compared to one and because the rainbow itself is spread over a greater area of the sky. The dark area of unlit sky lying between the primary and secondary bows is called Alexander’s band, after Alexander of Aphrodisias who first described it”.

Emeryville is a miraculous place. I have even more miraculous shots. How can I share them here?
Instagram is definitely the way to go but if you have historic pics, I’d love to post them. Contact me at evilleeye@gmail.com
Hi Rob..I saw it too but when I saw it at 7:30, it was not double anymore. But it’s the first rainbow I’ve seen since I moved here in ’84. The doubles I’ve seen in Oregon are usually one below the other.
Thanks Sue. I just think it’s cool that something from nature can bring us all together if only for a moment.
